No. A batter’s movement away from the ball does not, by itself, make the delivery Wide. Assess normal-stroke reach from the striker’s normal guard position and the positions occupied after the ball came into play. The final position alone does not supply that comparison.

Movement alone is not enough

Hypothetical example: The striker begins in a normal stance, then steps away as the ball travels. The ball passes beyond the striker’s reach after that movement, but it would have been within reach from the striker’s normal position for a normal stroke.

Output: Movement alone does not justify a Wide decision. The relevant comparison is not simply “where the batter ended up” and “where the ball passed”. The striker’s normal position and normal stroke remain part of the assessment. This follows the reach-based test in MCC Law 22, Wide Ball.

Contact with the batter or bat changes the result

Hypothetical example: The striker moves across the crease, and the delivery then touches the bat before passing behind them.

Output: It is not a Wide. The same result applies if the ball touches the striker rather than the bat. Contact is therefore decisive in this example, even though the batter’s movement may have changed the ball’s apparent path.

What a screenshot can and cannot show

Hypothetical evidence: A single screenshot shows the ball outside the painted guide area, but it does not show the striker’s starting position, movement, whether the ball touched bat or person, or the complete delivery path.

Output: The screenshot alone is insufficient to determine a Wide. It may show location at one instant, but not the contact history or the comparison with the striker’s normal position and stroke. A competition’s playing conditions may also modify how decisions are administered, so this explanation does not judge any actual match.
